The 22 best affordable hotels in Bangkok

Grand Deluxe Room and regional wall art
Samala Jacuzzi room
Natee Deluxe King

Travellers love Bangkok for many reasons, and great value is one of them. Few big cities can match the quality of hotels here, even at modest prices. Value is about more than low rates, though.

The hotels we've picked give you more than you expect. We chose each one for its location, comfort, and style, plus extras you'd normally pay more for. Many have rooftop pools with skyline views, good restaurants and lively bars. Several offer free tuk-tuk transfers to the nearest Skytrain or MRT station.

Most are close to Bangkok's most popular neighbourhoods, from Sukhumvit and Silom to Siam and Chinatown. If you want to save money without sacrificing quality, these hotels are a smart choice.

Bars, international restaurants, and late-night venues line the streets, and Central Embassy and Bumrungrad Hospital are a quick ride away.

Neo-Local by Design

Maison is an independent design hotel created by a third-generation Thai hotelier, and it wears its love of Bangkok proudly. The team call the approach Neo-Local: Thai craft, flavours and stories woven into every corner. The Cabinet of Curiosity, the hotel's own art gallery, shows rotating exhibitions by local Thai artists.

Thai Craft, Modern Comfort

Rooms feature the textures and tones of Thai craftsmanship, with large windows overlooking the city, a smart TV, and a wireless-charging alarm clock with a Bluetooth speaker. Coffee capsules are replenished daily. Suites add a soaking tub by the window and a Dyson hairdryer, and the top-floor two-bedroom Executive Suite offers panoramic views.

Thai Twists, a Somtum Bar and a Craft Café

Come hungry, because there's a lot to try. The all-day restaurant puts a playful twist on Thai cooking, and the bar and grill serves comfort food and Asian fusion dishes late into the night. For something more local, the somtum bar serves authentic Esan food, the bold, spicy cooking of northeastern Thailand, with indoor and outdoor seating. A cosy craft café at the front of the hotel is the place for coffee and freshly baked pastries.

Bulann Moonlight Spa and a Firefly Pool

Bulann Moonlight Spa draws on generations of Thai healing, with tropical herbs, spices and time-honoured massage, plus its signature moonlight baths and a sauna. The compact outdoor pool takes its cue from old Bangkok's riverbanks, with lights that glimmer like fireflies after dark. The gym is open 24 hours for those who want to stay fit.

Thonburi & Wang Lang

Theatre Residence is on the quieter Thonburi side of the river, in one of Bangkok's oldest neighbourhoods. The Grand Palace is right across the water. Wat Rakang, the Temple of the Bells, is a hundred metres away, and Wang Lang Market, a busy day market full of Thai food and fresh fruit, is next door. Wat Arun is a five-minute tuk-tuk ride away, and ferries cross to the Grand Palace and Wat Pho.

A Theatre by the River

This riverside site once housed the Patravadi Theatre. Today the building is modern, but it fits easily into the surrounding old neighbourhood.

River Suites and Kitchenettes

This is a serviced residence, so rooms feel more like apartments, and everyone has a kitchenette. The riverfront suites look across to the Grand Palace and Wat Arun from sunrise to sunset. Poolside rooms open straight onto the courtyard, and top-floor rooms have river views.

Sunset on the Terrace and a Neighbourhood Café

The riverside restaurant offers front-row views of the river's famous landmarks. Its terrace is the place for a sunset cocktail as the light shifts across the temples, before dinner inside. For something lighter, the café takes its cue from the streets around Wat Rakang, with local dishes, good coffee and seasonal fruit juices.

Free Local Experiences and an Open-Air Pool

Theatre Residence makes it easy to get to know the neighbourhood. A free guided walk takes guests through Wang Lang Market or to Wat Rakang every day, and the lobby hosts a free workshop each afternoon, from Thai dessert-making and garland folding to bracelet-making and a traditional Thai music performance by local students. Afterwards, cool off in the open-air pool, where a quiet corner is set aside for yoga.

Wat Pho and its famous massage school are a few minutes' walk away, the Grand Palace is just beyond, and Sanam Chai MRT is around the corner. Step out for street food, cafés and riverside restaurants, or stroll to Tha Maharaj for dinner by the water. Ferries and long-tail boats pass all day out front, with Wat Arun on the far bank.

From Warehouse to Boutique Hotel

The owners grew up in this Thai-Chinese neighbourhood and turned a 50-year-old riverside warehouse into a small, European-style hotel. The name Aurum is Latin for gold, and the gold-leaf logo nods to the Thai custom of pressing gold leaf onto Buddha images.
